Program Description

The Personal Support Worker Program trains students to assist people with routine activities of living (personal hygiene, daily homemaking). Personal Support Workers will work under the direction of health care professionals on health care teams. This could include the institutional setting or home care field. The students are instructed as to the methods of working with people of any age who have a disability or condition that affects their ability to care for themselves. Students learn to assist people with these everyday activities. It is ideal for the individual who demonstrates a natural hands-on approach to personal health care. A Personal Support Worker must be friendly and outgoing, yet empathetic and able to be objective and understand the clinical and medical aspects of assisting in personal health care.

As our population ages, and space in our hospitals becomes increasingly valuable, the need for well-trained Personal Support Workers will grow dramatically. They will need to provide compassionate and expert support for the aged, physically disabled and the unwell, both in institutions and in their homes. In our hands-on program, the students will improve their understanding of the aging process and will learn to better promote health, wellness and quality of life for the older patient and for the sick and dying. Our campus clinical facility gives the practical training needed to move successfully into the practicum with off-campus employment partners such as nursing homes, group home, and community health care agencies.

Employment Opportunities

Opportunities for employment are found in retirement homes, nursing homes, hospices, within private homes, hospitals, outreach care agencies, rehabilitation centers, home care agencies, long-term care agencies and in-home service agencies.
